How to Create Your MyNCUIBenefits Account
Create a MyNCUIBenefits Account to:
- File a claim for unemployment.
- Complete your weekly certification.
- Check your claim status.
What You Need to Create an Account
- A personal email address.
- Your Social Security number.
- If you are not a U.S. citizen, you will need your Alien Number and expiration date.
Steps to Create Your MyNCUIBenefits Account
- Click on the Create an Online Account link.
- Select I am an Individual/Claimant, requiring DES unemployment insurance claim services.
- Click I’m not a robot and then click Next.
- Enter your Social Security number and click Next.
- On the ‘User Account Creation’ page:
- Create a Username (Remember: you will need this to sign in. Click on the ? for username requirements).
- Enter a valid email address twice.
- Enter your contact phone number.
- Create a Password (Must be at least 8 characters and include an uppercase letter, lowercase letter, number 1-9 and special character).
- Select Create Account.
- Check your email. To finish setting up your account we will send you a confirmation email with a link. You must click the link to finish creating your account.
DES has security measures in place to help prevent fraud and protect your information. Identity verification and Multi-Factor Authentication, or MFA, are two ways that DES asks you to verify your identity.

Once you create your account you can start your claim. To do this:
- Click MyNCUIBenefits Sign In at the top right corner of des.nc.gov.
- Enter your username and password to open your online account.
You may be asked to verify your identity using Multi-Factor Authentication. DES will send a one-time passcode to the email address on your account. You must enter the one-time passcode and your password to sign in.
Do you remember your username?
- Yes – Enter the username in the Sign In page and click Forgot Password. Check your email for a link to reset your password.
- No – Click Forgot Username and enter your email address. Check your email for your username.
Your account will automatically be unlocked after 30 minutes, and you can try to sign in again or reset the password yourself.
You need to sign in to your MyNCUIBenefits account and select Account Settings on the top left of the screen to change your account settings.
Yes. You can try three times to log in to your online account. After three failed attempts to log in, your account will be locked for 30 minutes. Please sign in again after 30 minutes to access your account.
If you need to reset your password, enter your username on the Sign In page and click Forgot Password. Check your email for a link to reset your password.
Yes. The system will sign you out if you do not show any activity on your account for 60 minutes (1 hour). You will need to sign back in if you wish to continue in your online account.

When you apply for unemployment benefits, identity verification may be needed to make sure you are who you claim to be. It is an important security measure to help protect your identity and prevent fraud.
There are two main ways to verify your identity:
- Online through ID.me. You can create an account with ID.me and will have the option to complete either:
- Self-service online steps
- Video call
- In-person with USPS. You can take required paperwork to a participating U.S. post office.
DES now offers an SMS/text message feature. When you opt in, you will get texts to your cell phone to notify you if:
- DES needs more information to process your claim.
- A weekly certification is due or past due.
- You have an upcoming appointment.
- You have an upcoming appeal hearing.
- New documents have been added to your MyNCUIBenefits account.
To opt in to this feature, follow the steps below. Once you save those changes in your online account, you will begin receiving text messages immediately from DES.
- Sign in to your MyNCUIBenefits account.
- Go to My Profile and select Change Contact Information.
- Find the Preferred Contact Method drop-down menu.
- Choose Text.
- Click the checkbox beside I wish to receive text….
- Enter a valid cell phone number in the Cell Phone section.
- Reenter the same valid cell phone number in the Reenter Cell Phone Section.
- Save the changes.
